Armand Ball
Armand Ball, an eighteen-year resident of Sanibel, currently serves as Chair of the Parks and Recreation Committee for the City of Sanibel. He served as Chair of the City's Five Year Budget Committee in 1998, 1999, and 2001. He is Past President of the Board of Trustees of the Sanibel Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF), and of the Committee of the Islands (COTI). He volunteers for the SCCF Sea Turtle monitoring program. He serves on the Board of Advisors of the Center for Environmental and Sustainability Education (FGCU). He is also a member of the Sanibel Captiva Kiwanis Club.
A native of Dubach, Louisiana, Mr. Ball also calls Jacksonville, Florida, Nashville, Tennessee, St. Paul, Minnesota, and Bloomington, Indiana his "hometowns." He graduated from Louisiana College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Drama; he also holds a Master in Religious Education from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and a Master of Science degree from George Williams College. He is highly interested in issues regarding children. To this end, he is a former camp director for church and YMCA camps, a YMCA Executive from 1962 to 1974, and the CEO of the American Camping Association from 1974 to 1988. He is the co-author of a college text on camp management, and has taught numerous courses for camp directors in Russia, Bermuda, Venezuela, Malaysia, Japan and Canada. Currently, he serves as a consultant for children's camps, and as an expert witness for court cases involving children's camps.
Mr. Ball first visited Sanibel in 1968; he and his family made Sanibel their permanent home in 1988. He enjoys bridge, theater, travel, and birding. His special interests and concerns include environmental protection, international camps, and poverty and civil rights issues.
Mr. Ball has been a CHR board member since July 2001.
